San Clemente is a city in Orange County, California. It is nearly surrounded by the Pacific Ocean with only two entrances to the mainland: Via State Route 1 and Via Pico. San Clemente's beaches are protected by the San Clemente State Beach lifeguard program. The city is known for its long, wide, sandy beach and calm lagoon water that are protected by a reef. The reef and other offshore rocks and islands make it hazardous for swimming but popular for surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more.
San Clemente State Beach is located two miles south of the city of San Clemente in Orange County.
San Clemente State Beach is a beautiful beach for families. It has picnic and barbecue facilities, restrooms, showers and a playground. The southern end of the park has a pier for fishing and viewing marine life and a boat launch ramp.
The park's 1,500 feet of beach is popular with swimmers, body-boarders and surfers. Lifeguards are on duty on the weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day (May 28 – September 7). Park rangers conduct campfire programs at night during the summer.
Nearby Attractions: Sea Port Village Shopping Center and Sunken City Recreational Facility are just north of the state beach. Fullerton Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Chain of Lakes Regional Park, Robinson Preserve, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, El Morro Canyon County Park, and Lake Mission Viejo are to the east.
The first thing that will strike you about San Clemente State Beach is the sand. It's pristine, soft and groomed daily by a fleet of tractors.
The beach itself stretches out for nearly a mile and is divided into three sections: North Beach, Middle Beach and South Beach. North Beach is the most popular section and feels like it has been transported straight from Hawaii. Located at the end of Avenida Vista Hermosa, it's lined with palms and features the longest stretch of sand – perfect for sunbathing or taking a dip in the shallow waters. Middle Beach is located closer to Highway 1 and is less crowded. This section also offers great opportunities for swimming. South Beach sits just below the bluffs at Ladera Street but still allows for plenty of sunbathing space.
San Clemente State Beach offers volleyball courts, picnic tables, BBQ grills and even a small lifeguard tower in case of emergencies. San Clemente Pier (the longest in Orange County), boat launch ramps and access to Hubbs Sea World make this beach great for fishing enthusiasts as well as families looking to enjoy some quality time together on the water.
