San Juan Capistrano is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 57,843 at the 2010 census.

The town's name comes from the Spanish "Cañada de Juan Capistrano," named after the Spanish Franciscan friar and mission founder, Saint Juan Capistrano (1386-1456).

In 1776, the Spanish Portola expedition came west along the coast of modern-day Orange County. In 1796, the Spanish crown deeded a large overland area including present-day San Juan Capistrano to Felipe Lorenzana and his nephew Jose Antonio Yorba as Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana. Lorenzana's name was later applied to the San Juan Creek itself.

Lorenzana's adobe house was located at the highest point on the creek's west bank (which today is called "Rancho Santa Ana".) For their rancho, they planted olives, figs, and grapes. Stones from Yorba's two-story adobe house were used to build part of the historic El Camino Real, which connects Placentia with downtown San Diego.
