The Central District is a downtown area in San Clemente, CA. It is a popular destination for visitors to the city, as well as residents of San Clemente, CA. The district is located at the heart of the city and features restaurants, cafes, and other popular destinations. The district has many historical buildings that have been converted into modern businesses.
The City of San Clemente is situated along the coast of Southern California, just north of Los Angeles. With a population in excess of 53,000, and covering an area of approximately 18 square miles, San Clemente is the 12th largest city in Orange County. The City encompasses several distinct neighborhoods including: South San Clemente, San Clemente Bluffs, Old Town San Clemente, Camino Capistrano, Avenida Vista Hermosa, San Clemente Hills, and Ladera.
The geographic borders of San Clemente are La Pata Avenue to the north; El Camino Real to the east; Calle de Los Amigos to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The City is located approximately 52 miles southeast of Los Angeles and approximately 71 miles northwest of San Diego. The City is bounded by the cities of Oceanside to the north; Laguna Niguel to the south; Dana Point to the south and southwest; and Lake Forest to the west.
The Central District, also known as San Clemente Downtown or San Clemente Village, is one of three historic commercial areas within the city limits of San Clemente, California. It is bounded by Avenida Pico to the north and south, Camino Capistrano to the east, and Avenida Estada to the west. It contains a mix of retail, office and residential uses that include commercial and civic buildings located at the intersection of Camino Capistrano and Calle Tampico. The area is anchored by the San Clemente Inn and our town's central library.
The downtown district was designated a national historic district by the United States Secretary of the Interior in 2008. The district encompasses approximately, contributing properties built between 1890 and 1940.
It is listed on the National Register for its local significance in commerce, architecture, and engineering. The area has a high concentration of buildings designed by notable architects Irving Gill, Myron Hunt, William Templeton Johnson, Reginald Johnson (1878–1955), and Richard Requa (1894–1991).
San Clemente is a beach city in Orange County, California. The population was 45,753 at the 2010 census, up from 44,712 at the 2000 census. It has a reputation as an arts community and is known for a large number of successful artists that live in the city. The beach area was first settled by the Shoshonean Native American tribe thousands of years ago. European explorers encountered the Tongva (people of the California coast) and Ute (people of the mountains) before the arrival of Juan Cabrillo in 1542. Spanish missionaries established the first Mission in 1776 near Diamond Bar, but it was moved to its present location in San Juan Capistrano in 1782 because of strong surf.
